In the Treta Yuga, Mata Vaishno Devi was making her way to Trikuta Mountain. Bhairav Nath was chasing her from behind. Mata walked swiftly through the forest.

Scene 2/11 Charan Paduka — Sacred Footprints
📖 Scene 2 — Charan Paduka

Mata looked back. The divine footprints of her feet were imprinted on the stone. This sacred place came to be known as Charan Paduka — 2.5 km from Katra.

Scene 3/11 Banganga — Hanuman Quenched Thirst
📖 Scene 3 — Banganga

Mata's devotee Hanuman Ji was parched with thirst. Mata shot a divine arrow from her bow and sacred water sprang from the stone. This place came to be known as Banganga.

In the holy waters of Banganga, Mata washed her divine hair. This place is also called Kesh Ghat. The water became even more sacred with Mata's divine touch.

Scene 5/11 Ardhkuwari — 9 Months Meditation
📖 Scene 5 — Ardhkuwari Cave

Mata took refuge in a narrow cave on Trikuta Mountain called Garbh Joon. Here Mata meditated continuously for 9 months. This is the midpoint of the yatra — 6 km from Katra.

Scene 6/11 Bhavan — Mata's Abode on Trikuta
📖 Scene 6 — Bhavan

Mata reached the sacred cave on Trikuta Mountain (5,200 ft). Here are three Pindies — Maha Kali (red), Maha Saraswati (white) and Maha Lakshmi (yellow).

Bhairav Nath tried to reach Mata. Hanuman Ji blocked his path. A fierce battle broke out between them. Hanuman Ji pushed Bhairav back.

Scene 8/11 Mata Takes Maha Kali Form

Bhairav Nath continued to obstruct. Mata assumed the massive form of Maha Kali. The entire earth trembled with her power. Bhairav Nath realized his mistake.

Mata severed Bhairav Nath's head with her divine sword. His head flew 2.5 km away to a hilltop. At that very moment, Bhairav realized Mata's divinity.

"भैरव — तुम्हें वरदान देती हूँ!" मेरे दर्शन के बाद तुम्हारे दर्शन जरूरी होंगे।

Bhairav Nath repented. Mata granted him a boon — "A devotee who visits me but does not visit Bhairav Nath shall have an incomplete yatra." Bhairav Nath was made the divine gatekeeper.

Scene 11/11 Divine Darshan — Mata's Three Pindies
📖 Scene 11 — Divine Darshan

In the Bhawan are three Pindies — Maha Kali (Red), Maha Saraswati (White) and Maha Lakshmi (Yellow). They are naturally formed. Darshan of these destroys sins of many lifetimes. Jai Mata Vaishno Devi!

Complete Sacred Story of Mata Vaishno Devi

Mata's Avatar

Mata Vaishno Devi is the combined form of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. She was born on earth in the Satya Yuga to bless devotees and reside on Trikuta Mountain.

Banganga and Hanuman

Mata's devotee Hanuman Ji was thirsty. Mata shot a divine arrow and sacred water sprang from the stone — called Banganga. Mata also washed her hair here.

Ardhkuwari — Garbh Joon

Escaping Bhairav, Mata took refuge in a narrow cave called Garbh Joon. She meditated here for 9 months. The Ardhkuwari cave is only 1.5 ft wide and 15 meters long.

Bhairav Vadh and Varadaan

When Bhairav kept pursuing, Mata took Maha Kali form and severed his head. It flew 2.5 km away. Mata blessed him — the yatra is incomplete without Bhairav's darshan.

Sacred Pindies
