The Holy Cave — Mata's Eternal Abode
The Holy Cave (also called Bhawan) of Mata Vaishno Devi is located on Trikuta Mountain at an altitude of 5,200 feet (1,585 meters). This is where Mata defeated Bhairav Nath and permanently took up residence. In the cave, Mata manifests in Pindi form — three natural rock formations representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.
⚫
Maha Kali
Left Pindi — Dark-colored. Goddess of power, courage, and destruction of evil. Eight-armed form.
🟡
Maha Lakshmi
Central Pindi — Largest, golden-colored. Goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance.
⚪
Maha Saraswati
Right Pindi — White-colored. Goddess of knowledge, learning, music, and arts.
The Mystery — Swayambhu Pindies
The greatest mystery of the holy cave is that all three Pindies are Swayambhu — not made by any human hand. They are natural rock formations that spontaneously appeared in the cave. No scientist or archaeologist has been able to explain how these Pindies came to form in this shape. A sacred stream called Gufa Ganga flows through the cave, maintaining a constant temperature year-round. Devotees receive this water as holy prasad.

Mata Vaishno Devi's ancient holy cave — where the three Pindies reside. Devotees crawl through to take darshan.
The Old Cave (Ancient Cave)
The original cave, called the Purani Gufa (Old Cave), is extremely narrow:
- Length: Approximately 30 meters (98 feet)
- Width: Extremely narrow — barely one person can pass
- Height: Very low — must crawl throughout
- Water: Sacred stream flows throughout the cave
- Temperature: Very cold inside — 10-12°C

New Cave's grand entrance — with golden arch and red carpet, modern, wide and comfortable for all devotees.
The New Cave (Modern Cave)
To accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and for the benefit of elderly and differently-abled devotees, the Shrine Board constructed a New Cave:
- Wide and tall — can walk upright
- Proper lighting throughout
- Better crowd management
- Suitable for elderly and children
- Takes less time than the ancient cave
The Bhawan Complex
The entire complex around the holy cave is called the Bhawan, which includes:
- Grand Aarti Hall — thousands of devotees worship together
- 24-hour Langar Hall — free food for all
- Shrine Board Dharamshala — overnight stay facilities
- Large LED Screens — live broadcast of aarti
- Prasad Center — Panchmeva prasad available
- ATM and Medical Center

Bhawan's night view — Mata's divine abode glowing with light, with thousands of devotees every night
