Where Mata's arrow drew holy water — the first sacred stop of the yatra
Banganga is the first and extremely important stop on the Mata Vaishno Devi yatra. Located just 1.5 km from Katra at an altitude of 2,805 feet (855 meters), this is where Mata shot her divine arrow at the mountain, and a sacred stream of water appeared. The name Banganga comes from Ban (arrow) + Ganga (holy river).

As Mata Vaishno Devi was fleeing from Bhairav Nath northward toward Trikuta Mountain, she and her companion Langur Veer became thirsty. There was no water source in the area. Mata took her divine bow and shot an arrow at the mountain. Where the arrow struck, a sacred, cold stream of water burst forth. Mata and Langur Veer quenched their thirst. Mata bathed here and performed prayers. Thus Banganga — Arrow's Ganges — came to be.

🙏 Jai Mata Di! Glory to the sacred Banganga! 🙏
