Where Mata meditated for nine months — discover the divine significance
Ardhkuwari, also known as Garbh Joon, is the most important midway stop on the Mata Vaishno Devi yatra. Located approximately 12 km from Katra and 6 km from Bhawan, at an altitude of 4,850 feet (1,478 meters), this is the sacred place where Mata Vaishno Devi hid from Bhairav Nath in a narrow natural cave and meditated for nine months.
As Mata Vaishno Devi was fleeing from Bhairav Nath toward Trikuta Mountain, she spotted a narrow natural cave. It was so narrow that only one person could pass through at a time. Mata entered it. Bhairav Nath, being large and powerful, could not enter the cave. Inside, Mata spent nine months in deep meditation and tapasya. This is why the cave is called Garbh Joon (Divine Womb). Every devotee who passes through this cave experiences what feels like spiritual rebirth — being born again from the divine mother's womb.

The Shrine Board has built excellent rest houses at Ardhkuwari. Thousands of devotees stop here for the night and continue to Bhawan in the morning. Langar (free food) is available around the clock.
Booking: Rooms at Ardhkuwari can be booked online at maavaishnodevi.com. Book well in advance, especially during Navratri.
Passing through the Garbh Joon cave is a symbol of liberation from worldly bonds. As the devotee crawls through this narrow cave, they must leave behind ego, anger, and greed. They emerge transformed — a new person. It is believed that whoever enters the Garbh Joon cave with a pure heart chanting "Jai Mata Di" receives Mata's special grace. This is rebirth — being born from the Divine Mother's womb.
🙏 Jai Mata Di! Jai Ardhkuwari! 🙏
